ASUU Strike Update: Federal Government Resolved To Open Nigerian Varsities Nextweek With Or Without ASUU

The ASUU strike has extended a couple of months and the FG and ASUU haven’t been able to reach a compromise. The latest news coming your way on ASUU strike is that the FG is set to open Nigerian Universities with or without ASUU, according to ScanNews Nigeria. President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa.

An official of the Vice President’s office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the Universities resume next week. The President will at next Monday’s meeting present to the ASUU leadership the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike. A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the Universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements.

Already, most of the governing councils of the Universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the Universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan. It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the Universities system from the direction it is facing at present.

Nigeria To Witness Partial Solar Eclipse Tomorrow Sunday 3rd Nov. 2013 – NASRDA

Nigeria’s National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has predicted that a partial solar eclipse will occur in different parts of the country on Sunday.

The Director-General of NASDRA, Seidu Mohammed, a professor, made this known when he briefed news-men in Abuja on Tuesday.
An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured. This occurs either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer, as seen from the earth.

Mohammed advised Nigerians not to panic as nothing untoward would happen on that day.
“These things are natural phenomena; Nigerians should not be afraid; the agency has a responsibility to the nation, hence the reason for the early warning signal,” he said.

Mohammed said that the partial eclipse would not affect the airspace but advised Nigerians not to think that the world would come to an end because of the occurrence. Opara Fidelis, another professor, who is Director, Centre for Basic Space Science, said different parts of the country would witness the eclipse at different times of the day.

He said that for instance, Abuja would witness it at 1p.m.Lagos, 12:30 pm.Kano, 1.07 p m. and Enugu, 1.04 p.m.

Fidelis advised Nigerians to wear sunglasses to view the occurrence, adding that the sunglasses measure would protect their eyes.

Meanwhile, the NASDRA director-general said that the agency would provide such glasses for some Nigerians, especially children and select Nigerians. He said that the entire African continent would be affected by the partial eclipse, while some other parts of the world would witness total eclipse.

Mohammed urged Nigerians to go about their normal businesses as such occurrences happened occasionally.
He said that partial eclipse would occur again in April 2014March 2015 and September, 2016. (NAN)
